MARCH TO NOVEMBER
CAIRNS
The holiday capital of northern Queensland and ideally located within short distance of the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, Cairns has incredible weather, a laid back tropical atmosphere and plenty more to offer. One of Cairns’ many bars or restaurants would be the ideal place to kick back, enjoy the views and toast the start of an amazing motorcycle tour.
TWO DAY TOUR
CAP TRIBULATION AND THE WATERFALL CIRCUIT
This tour covers the highlights of far north Queensland in just two days, there’s a huge amount to see and do on this rainforest and coastal adventure.
DAY ONE – 232KM
Leaving Cairns you’ll ride the beautiful coastal route along Captain Cook Highway with spectacular views over the Coral Sea. Why not try hang-gliding or visit Hartley’s Croc Adventure on the way!
Continuing north you’ll reach one of the oldest rainforest on earth in the Daintree. The ferry takes you over the Daintree River and onto a narrow winding road through the rainforest with views to the Barrier Reef on one side and dense wildlife filled rainforest on the other. The visitor centre has a series of platforms taking you into the canopy and a huge amount of information about the flora and fauna of the area.
Cape Tribulation was named by Captain Cook in 1770 after he ran aground on a nearby reef. It’s a beautiful bay with a lovely beach. Rainforest and coconut palms grow right down to the beach and with few people around you can imagine Cook’s ship the Endeavour sailing around the headland.
You’ll return on the same road back towards Port Douglas with great views in the opposite direction and, once over the river crossing, you’ll pull into Mossman Gorge 20km or so from Port Douglas.
There’s nothing nicer on a warm, tropical day than stripping the bike gear off and jumping in the cool waters of the Mossman River. Huge boulders have been tossed around by the raging torrents in the wet season but during ‘the dry’ they are a great place to sit, relax and take in the beautiful rainforest surroundings.
Once cooled off you’ll be keen to ride into Port Douglas for a meal at one of the many outdoor restaurants in this small, friendly, tropical town.
DAY TWO – 283KM
Leaving Port Douglas you’ll twist and turn up the rainforest escarpment on a great biking road to Mount Molloy and Atherton in the Tablelands. It’s a great spot for a morning coffee.
Meandering alongside the Herberton State Forest you’ll reach Millaa Millaa and the Waterfall Circuit. It’s a short loop road with many lovely waterfalls. Some such as the Millaa Millaa Falls are easily reached and a great spot for a swim whilst others require more of a walk down sometimes steep forest tracks. Riding to Malanda there’s another waterfall with the Tree Kangaroo Café ideally situated for lunch.
The Curtain Fig Tree is a must-see on the road to Yungaburra and once in the village stop at the end of town and wander along the river hopefully spotting a platypus on the way!
The Gillies Range Road back to Cairns is an incredible ride with spectacular views. Keep your eyes on the road though as there are 40km of incredibly tight corners to enjoy!
THREE DAY TOUR
CAPE TRIBULATION, THE WATERFALL CIRCUIT AND THE UNDARA LAVA TUBES
Get a feel for the great Australian ‘Outback’ on this extension to the two day tour above taking you into outback Queensland to visit the amazing Undara Lava Tubes.
On day two (323km) you’ll take a similar route to the above but instead of visiting the Waterfall Circuit you’ll ride west to the Undara Experience. Included in the cost self-guided tour price is the Archway Explorer Excursion taking you inside the lava tubes themselves.
On day three (272km) you’ll ride back to Cairns via the Millaa Millaa Waterfall Circuit, Curtain Fig Tree, Yungaburra and the superb Gillies Range Road down the escarpment.
SIX DAY TOUR
THE ULTIMATE FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND EXPERIENCE
For the ultimate Far North Queensland riding experience you can’t go past this six day tour of the entire region.
You’ll see everything covered in the three day tour including the excursion into Undara’s lava tubes but instead of returning to Cairns from Undara you’ll ride south through outback Queensland to the heritage town of Charters Towers. Gold mining plays a big part in the local economy and the many historic buildings are an indication of the underground riches in the area.
From there it’s a short day’s ride to Townsville, where with an afternoon to spare there’s a lot to see!. ‘ReefHQ‘ has a huge aquarium full of the flora and fauna of the Great Barrier Reef. The Museum of Tropical Queensland is a fascinating visit or you could relax along the tropical beach and garden at ‘the Strand’ and at Riverway on the banks of the Ross River. Magnetic Island is just offshore too and a great day-trip destination.
Returning to Cairns you have a night at Mission Beach with its coconut lined beaches, indigenous Cassowaries (the second heaviest living bird on the planet) and a laid back, easy-going bar and restaurant scene in the evening.
The final day takes you into the Atherton Tablelands around the Waterfall Circuit, Curtain Fig Tree and back down to Cairns via the exciting Gillies Range Road.
It’s the ultimate bike tour of the entire region!
