Frequently asked questions - Sydney

Q. What is the depot address for renting a bike from Sydney?
A. The Sydney depot address is: 183 Parramatta Rd, Annandale NSW 2038, Australia.

Q. What are the terms and conditions for renting a bike from Sydney?
A. There are specific terms and conditions for the Sydney depot for bike rentals. These can be seen by selecting the 'terms' link for the appropriate bike, or clicking here for the Sydney terms and conditions.

Tyre exampleQ. How will the bike be equipped?
A. The 'dual purpose' bikes displayed in this section will all be equipped with both surfaced and unsurfaced riding in mind and to that end they will be fitted with engine bash plates, crash protectors, hand guards, hard side panniers (luggage boxes) and 70/30 biased tyres. 70/30 refers to the suggested usage for the tyres which in this case is 70% road oriented and 30% off-road. If you require more off-road biased tyres such as 50/50 or a specific brand or style of tyre, then these can be fitted by prior arrangement and a cost based on the specific tyre required. Please feel free to contact us for more information about this option.

Q. What do the kilometre allowances mean?
A. Unlimited - There is no daily limit for distance travelled, roam as far as you like.
Limited - The daily allowance for travel on these bikes is 250km. Additional distance is charged at 25 cents per kilometre.
City metro area only - This bike is limited to use within the Sydney CBD / metro area, a range of approximately 100 or 50km (depending on the exact model) around the depot. These bikes are not available for longer distance touring but can still be hired for extended periods for use within the city limits.

Q. What does 'Weekend rental' mean?
A. Weekend rentals are classed as 4pm collection on the Friday through to 10am return the following Monday, picking up and dropping off from the same depot. Prices displayed are for the full rental period, not per day as with the other listings.

Q. Where is the depot, what's the easiest way to get to it and can I collect from the airport?
A. The depot is located in Annandale 5 - 10 minutes from the city centre and about AU$15.00 in a taxi. The airport is 20 - 25 minutes and approximately AU$45.00 in a taxi. Airport collections and drop offs are not available I'm afraid. If flying long distance we recommend you have a night's rest before collecting the bike. Complimentary transport to the depot (one-way only) is available for rentals of 7 days or more, but this MUST be arranged with us at least two weeks prior to the commencement of your ride. Contact us for more information.

Q. Can I leave luggage at the depot during my trip and / or what if I need to ship it to another city?
A. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the depot during your trip and there is no charge. We'd be pleased to arrange shipping to another depot if you are finishing in another city. Charges are at our cost price.

Q. What are the depot opening hours?
A. Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Saturday between 9am and 11am and 4-5pm. Sunday is by appointment only between 4-5pm.

Q. Can I rent a helmet and riding equipment?
A. Good quality helmets & gloves are included free for the rider, textile jackets, trousers and boots can all be rented but if you are on a longer trip it is often more comfortable to bring your own equipment. No guarantees are made for riding gear and it is rented at your own risk. Prices can be seen on the Sydney rental page.

Q. What is the security bond and insurance excess?
A. Security bond amounts will vary depending on the bike you rent, the amount is listed against each bike on the rentals page. Rentals of fewer than 21 days (excluding one way relocations) are processed as a 'pre-authorisation' against a credit card. If the rental is 21 days or more then the security deposit/bond is processed on a credit card and refunded upon safe return of the undamaged bike. Your bond will automatically expire once the bike is returned but please bear in mind we have no control over how long the funds take to reach your account. It can take a number of days and this is determined by your bank, not ours.

The insurance excess is not pre-authorised or processed on your card. It is the most you would have to pay in the event of an accident. If the damage is only AU$100, for example, then that's all you pay but if the damage is AU$6,000 and the excess is AU$4,000 you would be liable for AU$4,000 and the insurance pays the remainder. You can reduce the excess by half for AU$18.00 per day as long as your rental is for 7 days or more.

Q. What license do I need and what else should I bring when collecting the bike?
A. For large capacity bikes you will need a full bike licence written in English. If it is not in English you will need an International Drivers Permit. For small capacity bikes and scooters your home country license must allow you to ride the size of bike you are renting. You will also need your passport if from overseas and a VISA or Mastercard for the rental payment and security deposit. Don't forget to bring the booking confirmation with the address and telephone number of the depot so you can find it when you arrive!

Q. Can I rent a Sat-nav for my trip?
A. Yes, see costs detailed above.

Q. Can I bring my own Sat-nav / GPS unit for my trip?
A. Yes you can, no problem at all. We can fit your GPS unit to the bike for a one-off charge of AU$ 20.00, but you will need to ensure that you bring along everything required to mount the GPS such as the power cable, cradle etc. as we can't guarantee we'll have the correct equipment to match your specific unit.

Q. Are locks supplied?
A. Yes. A lock is supplied and should be used every time you leave the bike.

Q. Will my mobile phone work in Australia and will I be able to get a signal?
A. Check with your phone company to see if they can turn on roaming allowing you to use your phone in Australia. It may be cheaper to buy a SIM card for your phone here (mobile phone shops are everywhere and SIM cards start at about AU$20). Mobile phones obtain a signal in almost all towns and cities, but outside built up areas reception can be patchy. In most outback regions it can be many hundreds of kilometres between towns and there will most likely be no signal at all in these areas.

Q. What happens if I break down?
A. The depot will provide you with a National Breakdown recovery number, but you should first try and talk to the depot in case it is something simple they can fix over the phone. The best solution to a serious problem depends on where you are and what the problem is. The depot will do everything they can to get you moving again and this is usually within 24 hours. It may involve a repair, replacement bike or alternative transport but the priority is to allow you to continue your trip. Specific terms and conditions apply to self guided tours including accommodation, which can be found on the relevant tour section of this site.

Q. Are there toll roads in Sydney?
A. Sydney motorways, the Harbour Bridge and tunnels are toll roads. You will be given a sheet explaining this when you collect the bike and if you expect to ride on motorways you will need to ensure tolls are paid. Please be aware that unpaid toll fines are charged to your credit card with a $20 administration fee. There is more information regarding tolls in the terms and conditions.
