Frequently asked questions - Melbourne

Q. What are the terms and conditions for renting a bike from Melbourne?
A. There are specific terms and conditions for each of the Melbourne depots, dependant on which bike you are renting. There are also general terms & conditions for bike rentals. The specific terms and conditions for each bike can be seen by selecting the 'terms' link for the appropriate bike, or you can click here, for the general terms and conditions.

Q. Where is the depot, what's the easiest way to get to it and can I collect from the airport?
A. The majority of the bikes are collected from the suburb of Hillside, Victoria Australia. This is really easy to get to from the city centre by taxi or rideshare and is only about 25 minutes to the north-east of the centre of Melbourne.

The airport is 20 minutes and approximately AU$ 45.00 in a taxi. Airport collections/drop offs are not available I'm afraid. If flying long distances you should have a night's rest before collecting the bike. Your confirmation will provide details of the collection address and if you need help finding accommodation for your first night just let us know.

Tyre exampleQ. How will the bike be equipped?
A. The 'dual purpose' bikes displayed in this section will all be equipped with both surfaced and unsurfaced riding in mind and to that end they will be fitted with engine bash plates, hand guards, hard side panniers (luggage boxes) and 80/20 biased tyres. 80/20 refers to the suggested usage for the tyres which in this case is 80% road oriented and 20% off-road. If you require more off-road biased tyres such as 50/50 or a specific brand or style of tyre, then these can be fitted by prior arrangement and a cost based on the specific tyre required. Please feel free to contact us for more information about this option.

Q. Can I leave luggage at the depot during my trip and / or what if I need to ship it to another city?
A. You are welcome to leave your luggage at the depot during your trip and there is no charge. Any post office can ship your luggage to another depot for you or we can put you in touch with a courier company that will ship it for you. Many people use large soft holdalls for their luggage so they can put the contents in the panniers, fold up the bags and take them with them. If you are travelling alone then a waterproof holdall can always be strapped to the pillion seat for extra storage capacity. Please note: If you elect to have your luggage shipped with one of the courier company then we can help make the necessary arrangements, but the final responsibility for the transport is with the courier / shipping company as they are not part of BikeRoundOz. Further details are available in the terms and conditions.

Q. Why are the higher kilometre model bikes lower cost?
A. The older bike models are still subject to strict safety and maintenance standards, they've simply travelled further than the rest of the fleet. They are offered at a reduced price over the newer models because of this and the price reduction often makes them a great value option for anyone that isn’t concerned with riding the latest edition of a specific bike. They are kept available on the fleet because they are still in good, reliable mechanical condition and offer a cost effective option for those riders on a tighter budget.

Q. What are the depot opening hours?
A. Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Saturday 9am to 1pm. Closed on Sundays, however it may be possible to arrange collections and drop offs by appointment.

Q. Can I rent a helmet and riding equipment?
A. Helmets, gloves, jackets and other accessories can all be rented but if you are on a longer trip it is often more comfortable to bring your own and they fit better. No guarantees are made for riding gear and it is rented at your own risk.

Q. What is the security bond and insurance excess?
A.Security bond amounts will vary depending on the bike you rent, the amount is listed against each bike on the rentals page. Rentals of fewer than 21 days (excluding one way relocations) are processed as a 'pre-authorisation' against a credit card. If the rental is 21 days or more then the security deposit/bond is processed on a credit card and refunded upon safe return of the undamaged bike. Your bond will automatically expire once the bike is returned but please bear in mind we have no control over how long the funds take to reach your account. It can take a number of days and this is determined by your bank, not ours.

The insurance excess is not pre-authorised or processed on your card. It is the most you would have to pay in the event of an accident. If the damage is only AU$100, for example, then that's all you pay but if the damage is AU$6,000 and the excess is AU$4,000 you would be liable for AU$4,000 and the insurance pays the remainder. You can reduce the excess by half for AU$18.00 per day as long as your rental is for 7 days or more.

Q. What license do I need and what else should I bring when collecting the bike?
A. For large capacity bikes you will need a full bike licence written in English. If it is not in English you will need an International Drivers Permit. For small capacity bikes and scooters your home country license must allow you to ride the size of bike you are renting. You will also need your passport if from overseas and a VISA or Mastercard for the rental payment and security deposit. Don't forget to bring the booking confirmation with the address and telephone number of the depot so you can find it when you arrive!

Q. Can I rent a Sat-nav for my trip?
A. GPS / sat-nav units are available, the cost will depend on the length of your trip. Please ask us for more details. Numbers of units are limited and so please book these in advance.

Q. Can I bring my own Sat-nav / GPS unit for my trip?
A. Yes you can, no problem at all. We can fit your GPS unit to the bike for a one-off charge of AU$ 25.00, but you will need to ensure that you bring along everything required to mount the GPS such as the power cable, cradle etc. as we can't guarantee we'll have the correct equipment to match your specific unit.

Q. Are tools and puncture repair kits supplied?
A. Yes. A simple tool kit and puncture repair kit with CO2 canisters will be supplied.

Q. Will my mobile phone work in Australia and will I be able to get a signal?
A. Check with your phone company to see if they can turn on roaming allowing you to use your phone in Australia. It may be cheaper to buy a SIM card for your phone here (mobile phone shops are everywhere and SIM cards start at about AU$20). Mobile phones obtain a signal in almost all towns and cities, but outside built up areas reception can be patchy. In most outback regions it can be many hundreds of kilometres between towns and there will most likely be no signal at all in these areas.

Q. What happens if I break down?
A. The depot will provide you with a number and you should call this to see if it is something simple they can fix over the phone. The best solution to a serious problem depends on where you are and what the problem is. The depot will do everything they can to get you moving again and this is usually within 24 hours. It may involve a repair, replacement bike or alternative transport but the priority is to allow you to continue your trip. Specific terms and conditions apply to our self guided tours including accommodation.

Q. What do I do about toll roads?
A. BikeRoundOz vehicles are registered so that tolls incurred by you when using any Australian toll road will be recorded and billed to you directly by NSW Roads & Maritime Services (RMS). Full details regarding tolls are available in the terms and conditions and you will be required to sign that you have read and understood the conditions of using the toll system when you collect your motorcycle.
