Explore Tasmania with Dakar legend Simon Pavey
Following on from the same training course that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman completed before their epic 'Long Way Round' ride, this fantastic ride led by Dakar legend Simon Pavey is the ideal way to practice the skills you've learned during the course of the weekend.

Having completed the skills course beforehand isn't a requirement, but this ride is a fantastic accompaniment to the training weekend and the ideal way to round out your learning.

If you'd like to explore some of the most spectacular scenery Tasmania has to offer under the experienced guidance of one of the finest motorcycle riders around, then this five day ride-out could be just the thing!

World renowned Dakar rider Simon Pavey is leading this fantastic guided motorcycle tour in and around some of the most spectacular areas of Tasmania. Simon has competed in 10 Dakar events so far and managed to complete 8 of them, with one of those completed rides being his very first attempt in 1998. To say the man is 'gifted' would certainly be putting it mildly; a better guide to the gravel tracks and back roads of Tasmania you couldn't possibly wish for.

Day One
The adventure starts in the beautiful city of Launceston which is located in the picturesque Tamar Valley of Northern Tasmania. Leaving 'Launy' as the locals call it, we'll cross the Tamar River and then leave the surfaced roads behind for some classic Tasmanian trails along sunken tracks through lush temperate rain forest.

These tracks generally consist of rocks of varying sizes with a liberal sprinkling of tree roots and perhaps even some mud thrown in for good measure. The exact conditions will depend on recent weather conditions of course so a flexible attitude will definitely be required!

After a brief pause for a great pub lunch in the town of Sheffield, we'll return to the surfaced roads again and continue on through rolling green countryside to our overnight stop in Burnie, a beautiful port city on the north-west coast of the island state.

There are two options for the afternoon ride into Burnie, both dirt, although one is more challenging than the other. Simon and the team will elaborate on the day and you'll be able to select the ride that bes suits your ability.

Exploring Tasmania with Simon Pavey
Explore Tasmania with Dakar legend Simon Pavey

Day Two
We start the day with plenty of remote, rugged tracks and trails that wind a narrow path through the remote north-west. Expect to encounter plenty of gravel, mud (depending on the weather), wheel ruts, the occasional water crossing and some hard sandy tracks.

The day includes the famous 'Western Explorer' which is a unique, often ignored route and one of Tasmania’s top rides through some really remote wilderness country; the perfect way to explore the western reaches - hence the name of course. A short 'rustic' ferry crossing is enjoyed across the Pieman River to the south which provides a chance to stretch the legs whilst waiting to cross and share stories of the ride thus-far. Day two will include an abundance of wildlife so caution is needed whilst riding. The day draws to a close in the town of Strahan.

Day Three
The third day on tour is spent exploring the beautiful surrounds of Strahan which is located on the stunning Macquarie Harbour. The bulk of the day is spent under the tutelage of Simon and his team, getting to grips with learning how to ride in sand. You'll then have the chance to put what you've learned into practice with some riding on sandy trails, coastal dunes and even the beach bordering the Southern Ocean! The day includes instruction on adventure bike setup for riding in sand, sand riding techniques, dune riding and bike recovery.

There will be an optional morning excursion to see the Gordon River Wilderness by helicopter if it is operating (weather dependent).

Day Four
One of Tasmania’s most spectacular rides is undoubtedly the paved route beginning from Strahan. Queenstown Road is a series of wonderful twisties through a rainforest blanketed landscape hiding a multitude of deep, cavernous gorges - unquestionably a great place to be on a bike. After having our fill of fun on the convoluted collection of turns we'll return to the off-road riding that Tasmania is rightly famed for. It will incorporate some fast, wide dirt roads that progressively get smaller and narrower, before eventually petering out entirely; this is where you'll have the opportunity to participate in an optional 'trials' section. To round out the day we'll hit some wide, fast dirt tracks that will take us to our overnight stop on the shores of the Great Lake in the heart of Tasmania’s Central Plateau.

Day Five
The final day of the adventure starts with some fast wide dirt roads though Tasmanian farmland and wetlands, before we enjoy some classic forest trail riding.  Jacob’s Ladder is the highlight of today’s ride and is a steep, narrow, 'zig-zagging' road in the Ben Lomond Ranges just 60km from Launceston. Descending from the heights of Ben Lomond we'll hit the surfaced roads once more for our final ride into Launceston, a well-earned drink and to celebrate a great adventure well ridden.

The tour incorporates some fairly 'wild' regions of Tasmania so all types of surface should be expected from loose shale, gravel and the occasional sandy patch, through to some muddy sections if there has been recent rainfall. Many of the tracks will be potholed and are infrequently maintained but that's all part of what makes this such an adventure. With Simon Pavey leading the way and the BikeRoundOz team providing backup it's sure to be an exciting, invigorating, informative and also safe five days exploring Tasmania.

This mixed surface tour starts near Launceston in Tasmania and is the ideal accompaniment to the Off Road Skills Course which is conducted over the weekend before. The perfect opportunity to practice everything you've learned, brush up on anything you might have forgotten or simply enjoy a ride through the wilderness with Simon Pavey - something not a lot of people can say they've experienced!

Note: You'll need to be in Launceston, Tasmania on the evening before the start of the ride.
