Simon Pavey
Explore Victoria with Dakar legend Simon Pavey
Following on from the same training course that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman completed before their epic 'Long Way Round' ride, this fantastic ride led by Dakar legend Simon Pavey is the ideal way to practice the skills you've learned during the course of the weekend.

Having completed the skills course beforehand isn't a requirement, but this ride is a fantastic accompaniment to the training weekend and the ideal way to round out your learning.

If you'd like to explore some of the most spectacular scenery Victoria has to offer under the experienced guidance of one of the finest motorcycle riders around, then this five day ride-out could be just the thing!

World renowned Dakar rider Simon Pavey is leading this fantastic guided motorcycle tour in and around some of the most spectacular areas of Victoria. Simon has competed in 10 Dakar events so far and managed to complete 8 of them, with one of those completed rides being his very first attempt in 1998. To say the man is 'gifted' would certainly be putting it mildly; a better guide to the gravel tracks and back roads of Victoria you couldn't possibly wish for.

Day One
An early start for the first day as we ride the wonderful series of paved road 'twisties' that takes us on to Whitfield, through to Cheshunt and from there on an amazing dirt road ride courtesy of the Rose River and Goldie Spur tracks bordering Mount Buffalo National Park; the views are tremendous across here. Riding on to Bright we ascend to the wonderful high country village of Falls Creek, well above the snowline where we stay for the night.

Day Two
A big ride today not in terms of distance, but rather in time spent on the dirt. Descending from Falls Creek we ride on to the legendary small town of Omeo then north to Benambra, where we join the dirt of the Benambra to Corryong Road as we enter the stunning Alpine National Park. Here we take the opportunity to really explore some of the many dirt tracks that abound in the national park, including some challenging (and great fun) steep country riding.

Crossing into New South Wales we enter the Kosciuszko National Park before riding the incredible Alpine Way to finish in the high lovely town of Jindabyne. If you're feeling up to it, there's a chance to try the bikes on a crossing of the Murray River before we turn in for the night as well.

Day Three
Another spectacular day of riding beginning with the amazing dirt of the Barry Way, which clings to the valley sides precariously and offers sweeping views across the distant valleys. Some more superb dirt track riding will be had on the Tulloch Track, before a quick break and a chance to explore the Buchan Caves.

From Buchan we ride the asphalt out from the forests of the Snowy River National Park and on to the beautiful seaside resort town of Lakes Entrance, where we spend the next two nights.

Day Four
Day four sees us returning up into the mountains to explore some rarely used tracks and try out some challenging sections of dirt, putting into practice everything learnt during the Off Road Skills course. Narrow tracks, endless forests and challenging riding are a feature of this day - plus of course plenty of fun!

Day Five
Our last day will see us ride to the beautiful town of Licola before hitting the dirt of the Heyfield-Jamieson Road for more superb dirt riding as we cross the Great Dividing Range. Once back at Mansfield and time permitting we'll ride to the legendary Craig’s Hut as featured in the 'Man from Snowy River' movie before returning to Mansfield and closing out our five days of mountains and ocean.

The majority of the distance covered in this ride is on surfaced roads but most of the time on tour is spent on the unsurfaced gravel tracks, fire roads and oft-ignored smaller routes through the National Parks of Victoria. Some sections of road will be narrow with sharp turns, the occasional blind corner and some steep drop-offs affording spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. Easily handled with a bit of common sense and the application of the skills learned on the weekend training course.

Simon Pavey's Australian Adventure - Dirt tracks in Victoria

The tour incorporates some fairly 'wild' regions of Victoria so all types of surface should be expected from loose shale, gravel and the occasional sandy patch, through to some muddy sections if there has been recent rainfall. Many of the tracks will be potholed and are infrequently maintained but that's all part of what makes this such an adventure. With Simon Pavey leading the way and the BikeRoundOz team providing backup it's sure to be an exciting, invigorating, informative and also safe five days exploring Victoria.

This mixed surface tour starts near Mansfield, Victoria and is the ideal accompaniment to the Off Road Skills Course which is conducted over the weekend before. The perfect opportunity to practice everything you've learned, brush up on anything you might have forgotten or simply enjoy a ride through the wilderness with Simon Pavey - something not a lot of people can say they've experienced!
